A platform for queer and fluid artists from the African diaspora
This is Upepo is a platform featuring a group of queer and fluid artists from a certain part of the world. Currently the focus lies on the African diaspora.
Upepo puts the spotlight on those histories, identities and art practices that have been erased by western imperialism and colonialism. By doing so we structurally protest western and patriarchal (art) institutions whose collections feature mostly white artists, of which the biggest part are men. By the upholding of a mostly white board, management team and staff, most (art) institutions reproduce colonial power structures.
Upepo is here to fundamentally critique the western and patriarchal (art) canon and to offer concrete alternatives. In Swahili, the native language of (East) Africa, Upepo translates as ‘breeze’.
